Multi Million pound skills funding secured thanks to CITB

An intervention by CITB has helped a region in the north of England secure a multi million pound project to support construction employers with the cost of their training.

Leeds City Region received the injection of funding from the European Social Fund, after CITB research identified a clear skills shortage in the area. The European funding bid was triggered by two pieces of CITB research: the first demonstrated the strong pipeline of work in the region, and the second the gap between supply and demand of skills. The report findings informed the strategic economic plan for the Leeds City Region, and this highlighted the need for construction to become a priority sector for the area.

CITB worked closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to increase awareness of the needs of construction employers within the region, raising the profile so that those within the combined authority could ensure construction was a priority sector for skills investment.

The funding means that employers can now receive up to 40% of the cost of their training and this is in addition to the CITB grants which are available.

One firm to benefit is Wakefield-based civil engineering company Peter Duffy Ltd. The company realised that if its managers and supervisors could be trained to recognise early symptoms of mental health illness among employees, then they would be helping all of their workers.

Melissa Stead from the company said: “We feel that the training is necessary, particularly as our industry is predominantly male and has the highest links to male suicide. The funding helps support training that is not seen as ‘mandatory’ and may sometimes be overlooked.”

Peter Duffy Ltd

Staff from all departments and levels within Peter Duffy Ltd have received mental health awareness training, and the programme has been extended to site staff, including managers, supervisors and operatives.

The company is being supported by The Skills Service, delivered by the West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges (WYCC).

Jeremy Wright, Partnership Manager for the Region, said: “We work to identify skills needs and then seek solutions to address them. We are pleased to have strong links with the LEP and other partner organisations so that, together, we have achieved a result which has broad-based benefits for employers in the area.”

CITB is now working with the WYCC on the next stage of training investment which is the Let’s Talk Real Skills project.
